GEMSS® and CE-QUAL-W2 Workshops

The ERM Surfacewater Modeling Group offers generic training workshops in our offices or onsite for individuals or small groups, as well as customized application setup or transfer workshops. The latter may be of interest for those performing a CE-QUAL-W2 or GEMSS® application for the first time. The workshops include GEMSS® software.

We offer three workshops. Workshop 1 covers CE-QUAL-W2 and the use of GEMSS® to support the application of the 2-D model. The workshop agenda is based on the workshops we have provided for NALMS, the Bureau of Reclamation, the World Bank, the USGS, and many private clients. Workshop 2 covers 3-D modeling using GEMSS®. Workshop 3 is an advanced version of Workshop 2. Each workshop is intended for six participants. If there are more potential attendees than spaces, we will give priority to those who have pending applications.

An important feature of the workshops is our use of one participant's waterbody as the workshop sample problem. Please indicate if you would like to suggest a waterbody when you register. Remember that we will need two months' planning time so we can work with the participant's datasets prior to the workshop and that we will rely on you for application datasets and a modicum of effort.

Each workshop offers PDC credits as recognized by the American Institute of Hydrology.

To obtain current workshop dates, please phone Mike Fichera (610.524.3603) or e-mail michael.fichera@erm.com.

We are currently planning Workshop 2 for May 19-21, 2008

Workshop 1
Reservoir Modeling Using CE-QUAL-W2

To those of you who have attended or are planning to attend one of the excellent, week-long Waterways Experiment Station CE-QUAL-W2 workshops in Portland, we note these differences:

  • Our workshop is shorter in duration but covers what we consider to be the essential elements of CE-QUAL-W2.
  • Our workshop focuses on a single waterbody provided by one of the participants.
  • The number of participants is limited to six.

  • Like the Portland workshop, our instructors have considerable experience in developing and applying CE-QUAL-W2. Edward M. Buchak developed the basic numerical scheme and wrote the Fortran code for the first versions of CE-QUAL-W2, which date to 1974. Venkat Kolluru, another instructor, has completed many applications of the model and is the chief software developer for GEMSS®. The cost is $495 USD and covers 2½ days in Exton, Pennsylvania, a western suburb of Philadelphia.

    Workshop 2
Three-dimensional Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Modeling Using GEMSS®

The instructors are Dr. Venkat S. Kolluru, Mike Fichera, and Shwet Prakash. Dr. Kolluru is the chief software developer for GEMSS®; Mr. Fichera and Mr. Prakash have completed many applications of the model. The cost is $995 USD and covers 3 days in Exton, Pennsylvania, a western suburb of Philadelphia. Group discount rates are offered to organizations providing more than 2 participants.

    Workshop 3
    Advanced GEMSS®

This course covers the same material as Workshop 2 with additional lectures covering the various modules of GEMSS® including water quality, sedimentation, chemical/oil spill, and larval entrainment. The cost is $1795 USD, and covers 5 days in Exton, Pennsylvania. Group discount rates are offered to organizations providing more than 2 participants.
